SFE is a project designed to facilitate community sound bank creation

By listening to community feedback, SFE will make sound banks more varied and will bring the essence of sound bank creations, whether created quickly or over time, into the future.

We need your input!

SFE is by the community, for the community. For this reason, we need to know what the community wants in terms of features, compatibility, flexibility or other important properties of the format.

Please send your feedback on what features you want to see in SFE on GitHub. As long as it's reasonable, we will take it into consideration, and you might see it in the next version of SFE.

We give back, so please do too

We don't hide behind an "unsolicited submissions policy." If you want credit for your ideas, then tell us! We'll give you credit in the announcement, in the specification preamble, and if appropriate in the main specification text.

That being said, we do prefer that if you include any extensions to the SFE format in your own software, that you give us permission to include the extension in a future version of the format. This way, everyone can take advantage of your format extension, which improves the experience for everyone else!

Please also read the code of conduct so you understand the values that the SFE project stands for. It aims to promote respect, constructive criticism, feature preservation, responsible AI use (where used), and courtesy in format implementations.

SFE is an open format that anyone can contribute to and/or use, so let's work together on making open-source sound banks the best they can be.

How can I contribute?

We need a lot of help, beyond just proposing new features! SFE is more than just formalising new features for sound banks.

For example, you can help forward software implementations of SFE by contributing code to the reference implementation, or implementing support in your own programs. We currently need a lot of help on the software side of things.

You could also test compatibility using hardware MIDI sound devices, improve the documentation, and report or discuss issues relating to the format specification.
