About SFE

SFE expands the SoundFont format with new features

Due to the limitations of the SoundFont format, SFE began in 2020 to research backwards-compatible improvements and updates.

The SFE format includes many features that have been requested by SoundFont developers, as well as many new features that significantly expand musical possibilities, ensuring that it is a viable competitor to commercial sample library formats.

It also reconciles existing extensions to the format, providing one specification that developers can build extended sound banks to, providing all the features afforded by such extensions without needing a proprietary program.

SFE is also designed for future intercompatibility with leading open-source non-monolithic sound bank description formats such as SFZ, and possibly other formats.

If you wish to explore the SFE specification, contribute to the project, or follow its development, you can do so on GitHub.
